Rainbow Haven: community groups transforming service delivery

“If Rainbow Haven wasn’t here, a lot of people would be left stranded.
Who knows what would happen then?”

Ziadah, from Uganda

Rainbow Haven works with refugees and asylum seekers in Salford and East Manchester. At its drop-in centres anyone can access information, legal support, food, psychotherapy and a safe place to meet people. While it operates with just two part-time staff members, Rainbow Haven has helped shape the way services are delivered, through taking social work students on placement and successfully changing how statutory services deliver psychotherapy to its clients.

Run on a shoe-string budget, Rainbow Haven supports the contribution of Refugees and Asylum Seekers to the UK:

  • Making it easier for people access mental health counselling provides savings to the NHS by removing the need for prescription drugs and crisis interventions.
  • Immigrants, including refugees, pay £2.5 billion more into the public purse then they receive in benefits and public services.
  • Asylum-seeking children contribute positively to schools, in turn enabling their families to integrate into local communities.
