Local Solutions: Michael's story

Picture of Local Solutions: Michael's story

“If it wasn’t still for my case worker I’d still be on the streets, drinking, getting attacked or being constantly moved on by the police. Now I’ve got my own flat and I’m getting back on the straight and narrow.”

Michael, 24, Liverpool

Michael has dyspraxia, learning difficulties, and an addiction to alcohol. He became homeless as a teenager after a difficult family breakdown, leading to him sleeping rough and regularly being evicted from hostels that couldn’t offer appropriate support. Michael was a frequent problem for statutory services and was often arrested. He was brought into Local Solutions’ Intense Support Programme, the only scheme in Liverpool offering concentrated long-term support for homeless young people with complex needs. Ten months on, Michael’s life has transformed - he has stopped drinking, is living in his own flat and is preparing to enter training.

Homelessness costs the UK £33 billion per year. Local Solutions’ intensive support of just one homeless person means:

  • A saving of around £25,000 per year to the public purse through costs saved to the Police and judiciary, the NHS and other support services.
  • A potential future benefit of £75,000 to the National Exchequer if Michael can be helped into work.
